Help Horse & Hound support good causes

  • Exhibition to raise funds for Redwings

A fundraising art sale is being held at Redwings’ Aylsham visitor centre in Norfolk in April.

Sanctuary supporters have donated sketches, watercolours and acrylics for the sale.

There are portraits of several of the charity’s residents including Wiggins the donkey on show.

Prices range from £5 to £425 with all funds raised going directly towards the care of Redwings’ 1500 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules.

The charity hopes to build more paddocks at the Aylsham visitor centre with the funds raised.

To donate a picture contact Anne Galloway at agalloway@redwings.co.uk or ring 01508 481070. Donations will be accepted until 31 March.

The exhibition takes place over the Easter weekend (3-6 April) and on the following weekend (10-13 April) at Redwings Aylsham, Spa Lane, Aylsham, Norfolk.

    Grant for pony racing academies

New pony racing academies are being set-up in Britain following a £80,000 grant from The Racing Foundation.

The funds will be shared between the British Racing School, Northern Racing College and Pony Racing Authority.

The grant will enable Northern Racing College to start a new academy in April.

The Pony Racing Authority is looking for a second venue in the north of England and is considering running another course in the south-west.

The British Racing School’s pony racing academy in Newmarket was previously funded by donations from racehorse owners including Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum.

All the children that have attended the seven academies run so far have ridden in a race and one now holds her amateur riders permit.

“The aim is to increase the accessibility of the sport to children in all areas and encourage more young people to become involved in the sport,” said Clare Higgins from the British Racing School.

Budding young jockeys interested in signing up for one of the academies should email Clare.Higgins@brs.org.uk

    Horseworld campaign reaches £10,000

Animal Friends Insurance has donated £6,000 towards HorseWorld’s campaign to save an abandoned foal.

The campaign was started by the charity after its rescue team found two four-month-old foals left to fend for themselves.

One was found dead in a ditch but the other later named Felix is recovering at HorseWorld’s Bristol centre.

The latest donation takes the funds raised for Felix to over £10,000 and means his emergency treatment and ongoing care is covered.

“I am a keen horsewomen and when I heard Felix’s story I really wanted to help,” said Animals Friends founder Elaine Fairfax. “Unfortunately it’s not just Felix who needs help, there are literally thousands of others like him.”
