Supporters of equine charity Redwings are being urged to change their passwords after the organisation’s website was hacked over Christmas.
No financial details were accessed by the hackers, but the charity advises users to change their passwords as a precaution.
Redwings’ website was one of several organisations targeted over the festive period, and staff are encouraging supporters who use the same password for more than one account to update their information. Hackers could have access to email addresses and possibly any linked passwords.
“We are really surprised that anyone would target us,” a spokesman for Redwings told H&H.
“It seems there was a spate of organisations being attacked over Christmas including big organisations like Sony, Microsoft and Amazon, but that anyone would go after a charity like ours is absolutely shocking.
“We are so upset for those supporters who have been affected, especially over Christmas.
“We do not keep any of your financial information online but they may have had access to any linked passwords — so if you have set up an account and used the same password for our web gift shop as for any other shopping sites we would recommend you change it just to be sure.”
Redwings is unsure of how their site was hacked, and have gone to the police.
“We are currently investigating to find out how this happened and we will be passing on the information to the police so if anyone has found they have had any of their accounts targeted they should contact us,” added the spokesman.
Redwings was set up 30 years ago and is the UK’s largest horse sanctuary. It cares for more than 1,300 horses, ponies and donkeys each day and offers a home for life for all its equines.
