Horse & Hound is looking for 5 astute, dynamic recruits to join its award-winning editorial team. Five new roles have been created as part of a restructure of the editorial department. This new team structure will allow Horse & Hound to continue to serve its magazine audience in the way it always has, while providing even more content to its dedicated online following. These positions are all full-time and London-based.
If you want to join Horse & Hound at this exciting juncture in the brand’s development, take a look at the roles detailed below. To apply, send your CV and covering letter to the Content Director, Sarah Jenkins, at sarah_jenkins@ipcmedia.com, by 5pm Wednesday 11 June.
Print Editorial Manager
The equestrian group is looking for a highly skilled editorial manager, bursting with enthusiasm and ideas, who will help develop Horse & Hound magazine’s position at the helm of the equestrian market.
The successful candidate will be extremely efficient, managing the production process and ensuring Horse & Hound and associated print products are delivered on time, while maintaining accuracy and quality of content throughout.
The Print Editorial Manager will work with the Content Director to plan and develop magazine content that meets the market needs, as well as managing the magazine subbing team, implementing and maintaining high standards of editing, handling flatplans and page quotas, approving pages for press and ensuring effective collaboration within the
editorial department.
If you have a thorough understanding of magazine production processes, management experience on a consumer publication, superb communication skills and the ability to foster a collaborative team environment — plus excellent subbing skills, a clear understanding of media law, and strong knowledge of horse sport and the equestrian consumer — then we really want to hear from you.
Senior Print Sub Editor
Horse & Hound is searching for a highly skilled, enthusiastic senior sub editor to work across its print titles. We need someone who is a stickler for detail and will ensure accuracy and quality of content in keeping with house style, while rattling off engaging headlines, sells and captions. The successful candidate will be able to turn their hand to web copy, too.
Responsibilities will include appropriate subbing of copy, proof reading content and taking on corrections, and liaising with the art and picture teams over layouts.
You will need to ensure work meets deadlines and take on production responsibilities in the Print Editorial Manager’s absence, as well as assisting the digital department with subbing and uploading of SEO web content when required.
If you have excellent subbing, Indesign, communication and time management skills, plus a thorough understanding of relevant terminology and a passion for horse sports, and will be able to contribute feature ideas in keeping with the brand, please get in touch.
Print Sub Editor
Horse & Hound is looking for a team-playing, efficient sub-editor — who is a pedant when it comes to grammatical accuracy — to work across its print titles and turn their hand to web copy on occasion, too.
Responsibilities include ensuring accurate subbing of copy, fitting layouts, proof reading and taking on corrections. You will need to know a piaffe from a passage and be able to come up with witty headlines and captions. In addition, you will be asked to contribute feature ideas to editorial meetings as well as assisting the digital department with subbing and uploading of SEO web content as required.
If you are an equestrian enthusiast with a thorough understanding of relevant terminology, strong subbing skills and knowledge of Indesign, and you have the ability to work well as part of a team and manage your time effectively, then we really look forward to hearing from you.
Digital Sub Editor
If you can handle a content management system as well as a horse, are an SEO whizz, and have ideas on how to expand Horse & Hound’s online presence and reach, then this is the job for you.
You will be editing and repurposing content for the Horse & Hound website, updating evergreen web content, maximising SEO and outreach, using analytics and keyword research. The successful candidate will work with the Digital Editorial Manager to schedule social media and online content — overseeing the day-to-day running of the website.
Other responsibilities include producing regular newsletters, ensuring information on the site remains accurate, and covering for the Digital Editorial Manager in their absence. You will also have the opportunity to work on magazine pages.
Excellent subbing skills and knowledge of CMS, SEO and analytics are required for this role. You must also have the ability to prioritise, be flexible and communicate effectively with the team, as well as understanding the brand’s market and being a keen equestrian.
Junior Digital Sub Editor
Could you rise to the challenge of ensuring it is Horse & Hound’s online Badminton Horse Trials coverage that tops the search engine results, and that anyone looking for advice on an equine ailment or injury finds our features first? Then we’d like to hear from you.
This role entails subbing and uploading SEO web content, ensuring accuracy and maximising outreach further by building links where appropriate. Job responsibilities vary from writing witty or engaging captions for web galleries to compiling regular newsletters, circulating web stats and being a point of contact for website enquiries. You will also assist with sub editing of print pages when possible.
If you have good writing skills and an understanding of CMS, SEO and analytics, do get in touch. This position would also suit a hardworking, motivated graduate who is an equestrian enthusiast and is keen to learn and develop a career in equestrian journalism.
