Rider in critical condition after horse pelted with stones


  • A rider is in a critical condition after youths threw stones at her horse, causing it to spook and her to fall.

    The 28-year-old woman from Thurcroft was injured on Saturday 17 May.

    South Yorkshire Police said she was out riding when a group of 3 or 4 youths threw stones at the horse. The animal reared and she fell off.

    She was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital with serious injuries. She was released, but readmitted after complaining of headaches and underwent surgery.

    Police are appealing for witnesses and information about the incident, which happened about 5.45pm on Saturday 17 May, on a track near to Duke of Norfolk Lane, at Wickersley, Rotherham.

    Detective Inspector Steve Ashmore, of South Yorkshire Police said: “We are urging anyone who might have seen what happened or who has any information about the incident to come forward.

    “We’re also interested in hearing from anyone who has suffered similar problems in the area and will be visiting local stables.

    “This incident shows the serious consequences of antisocial behaviour.”
