Horse and rider complete epic charity ride around England

  • A man from Gloucestershire and his horse have raised £60,000 for charity, after completing a 2,600 mile ride around England.

William Reddaway, 65, from Cheltenham and his horse Strider started their epic journey back in May.

The whole trip — taking them to the 4 corners of England; Kent, Cornwall, Northumberland and Cumbria — took just under 7 months.

They completed their journey earlier this month, arriving at the Farncombe Estate near Broadway in the Cotswolds on 7 December, to the cheers of their supporters.

They visited 30 cathedrals on the trip, including York Minster

“It was time for a massive sense of relief, for gratitude to those there and the hundreds and hundreds who could not be — and a heartfelt ‘well done’ to the big pony,” said William.

He added: “It was absolutely wonderful to talk to so many people who had followed our progress, helped, supported and cared.”

William organised the trip to raise money for two charities that help disadvantaged children and families; Wormwood Scrubs Pony Centre in West London and the Family Holiday Association. He is continuing to raise money for them by giving talks about the ride.

William and Strider visited 30 cathedrals around England on their journey, staying with friends and supporters.

At one point, Strider developed a saddle sore, so William walked 1,000 miles alongside him, until the horse was comfortable enough to be ridden again.
