Stable yard and show centre owners using layers of disinfectant-soaked straw in gateways and on drives to combat the spread of foot-and-mouth disease need to ensure that these are adequate, warns MAFF.
Straw should be spread over an area at least as wide as the largest vehicle to pass over it and should extend for a car’s length to ensure that the entire circumference of a large tyre gets covered. Fresh disinfectant should be applied every other day, or more frequently if the straw becomes dirty.
