Farewell to pointing great John Daniell

  • One of point-to-pointing’s all-time great riders, John Daniell, died earlier this month. He was 91.

John rode 175 winners in his 35-year career. He won the Aintree Fox Hunters’ twice — on April Queen in 1960 and Aeriel III in 1964 — and was champion point-to-point rider in 1961. He also had a Cheltenham Festival winner — in the 1957 United Hunts’ Cup with Gay Roger.

After his retirement from race-riding at the age of 49, John maintained his links with pointing — he was clerk of the course at the Berkeley’s Woodford track for 35 years.

He was also a steward at Chepstow racecourse, a member of the inspection panel at the end of the steeplechase section at Badminton and officiated at Dublin Horse Show.
