Rescued horses seek skilled riders

  • The ILPH is searching for experienced riders to loan horses with competition potential

One of Britain’s leading horse charities is looking for advanced riders – BHS Stage3 or equivalent – to loan horses that have the potential to become competition horses.

The International League for the Protection of Horses, based in Norfolk, has a waiting list of around 1,100 people looking for horses but some of the horsesin their care need more competent riders than those presently registered with the society.

The league is always looking for homes for its horses where they can, if possible, live useful working lives – not just retire.

“We’ve had a number of people in the past who class themselves as good riders – about Stage 1 or Stage 11, ” said operations support manager, Nadine Hawkes. “But some of our horses need more advanced riders than that.

“We want to promote the fact that some horses from the ILPH are capable of going out and competing at affiliated level. All ILPH horses competing affiliated from January 2002 will have their names prefixed by ILPH.”

Two of the horses currently available are:

  • Ben, a four-year-old 15.2hh bay Thoroughbred cross, who came to the ILPH after being abandoned. He is “very green” but is thought to have all-round potential.
  • Little Ted, an 11-year-old 11.2hh Section A (without papers) who was a gift to the charity. He is said to “move well” and has a good “pop” over a jump. He is looking for small but capable rider to introduce him to Pony Club activities.

There are another five horses in the advanced category which will soon be ready for rehoming. All riders applying for a loan horses are assessed and have a home check
