Visitors to this year’s Burghley Pedigree Horse Trials (30 August-2 September) will experience a “new-look” competition as the event trials the proposed new Olympic eventing format.
The dressage and cross-country will remain as normal, but on the final day all the riders will show jump during the morning, with the top 25 jumping again in the afternoon.
The morning session will provide results for the unofficial team competition, as well as the final individual placings for the lower placed riders. The top 25 placings will be decided during the jumping in the afternoon.
The total length of the two show jumping courses will be the same as the phase’s original length (750m) before it was shortened two years ago.
The new format will enable eventers competing at the Olympics to represent their country as an individual and a team member with a single horse.
If the proposed format is accepted by the International Olympic Committee then Olympic eventing may be reduced to a single competition at future Games.
