Plans to reschedule the Marlborough Cup timber race have been halted following the escalation in the number of FMD cases.
Originally due to be held at the end of last month, and then earmarked for a date in October, the 2001 running of the event has now been cancelled.
A spokesperson at the Marlborough Cup office, said: “Last week’s sudden flurry of outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in Lancashire, and the continuing threat the disease poses in all parts of the country, has emphasised the need for extreme caution. The Marlborough Cup has to remain on the sidelines until the May Bank Holiday, 2002.”
