Oxford and Cambridge polo battle

  • Teams from Oxford and Cambridge Universities will be fighting it out on a polo pitch near Newmarket on 10 June 2001. But it’s not just top flight polo that’s promised.

As well as the University A teams and the Old Blues, the event will also host the Udaipur Cup and there’s also Riding for the Disabled polo.

It’s the second year the Cambridge and Newmarket Polo Club has put on the RDA matches.

Secretary of the club, Alison Schwabe, says: “We believe last year was the first such event anywhere in the world.

“The RDA riders receive some training and our polo ponies are so good that they don’t need to be led. Last year some broke into canter, no one fell off and there wasn’t a dry eye to be seen.”

Frankie Dettori presented the cup to the winning team in 2000.

The event also includes an annual race between two polo ponies and two sports cars. They race over the length of the pitch and back and in past years both have won.

“The car is ultimately faster but ponies are quicker on the turns,” explains Alison.

The club is expecting around two to three thousand people at the grounds in Dullingham near Newmarket with three big matches taking placeas well as the RDA events. The matches will start around 11am.
