As a direct result of discussions with dog legislation officers in the police, the British Horse Society has joined up with insurance company NFU Mutual to provide a series of puppy socialisation days.
Last month H&H reported that dog attacks on horses have almost doubled in the past year, according to the BHS.
There was a 43% increase in dog attacks reported to the BHS horse accidents (www.horseaccidents.org.uk) website in June 2013, compared with June 2012.
So the organisation set up a scheme to help get puppies used to horses.
Puppies are given the chance to meet horses, under the supervision of a police officer and experienced dog behaviourist.
“The experiences puppies have in the early weeks of their lives will have an enormous impact on their future. It is therefore vital that those experiences are positive and addressed appropriately,” said the BHS’s Sheila Hardy.
The next puppy socialisation course will take place near Banbury on Friday 20 September.
There will be two sessions, 10am-12pm and 1pm-3pm. Places will be limited on a first come, first served basis. Anyone interested should contact s.hardy@bhs.org.uk.
