The organisers of the Newark and Nottinghamshire County Show have confirmedthat the County Show on 12-13 May 2001 will go ahead unless there is a major deterioration in the foot and mouth situation.
However, although livestock classes are unlikely to be held,the move to the weekend date has resulted in a significant increase in light horse and show jumping entries.
Chief executive, Adrian Johnston said: “We are confident that unlessrestrictions are in place on the move of horses around the country, weanticipate an entry of more than 1,000 light horses.
“We have already had to order a reprint of our schedules, partly following the unfortunate but responsible decision taken by some other show societies.
“We have no livestock on the showground and full disinfectant facilities will be in place for all vehicle and members of public at the show. We have no reason to believe that our showground is or has been infected, however we have closed our gates and all events have beencancelled until 19 March.
“The two-week closure is voluntary but essential in playing our part in limiting the spread of this highly contagious and damaging disease.”
The organisers say they are confident that the show will go on.
This year the show has several new which include the arts andcrafts marquee, a sausage and cooked meats competition, demonstrations by theBritish Flyball Association, new floristry classes and various new displays inthe Countryside Arena.
