Ride around Balmoral

  • Two of Scotland’s major horse charities are to hold a sponsored round the Queen’s estate at Balmoral

BHS Scotland and the International League for the Protection of Horses(ILPH) have organised a sponsored ride round the Glenmuick area of Balmoral estate.

This is believed to be the first time that the Queen has given permission for such a ride to take place.

“The funds raised will be split between the two organisation,” says Helene Mauchlen of BHS Scotland.

“But it’s not just about raising money for our welfare work – we also want to raise awareness about access to safe off-road riding for equestrians.”

There will be three distances on offer – 20 miles, 10 miles and six miles. All will be on grass and forest tracks with some parts quite hilly, so horses need to be fit. The routes provide “spectacular” views of Royal Deeside.

It is also hoped that TV personality, Magnus Magnusson, who ischairman and vice president of the Paths for All Partnership, will be lending his support to the ride by taking part on an Icelandic pony.

A number of sponsors will be donating prizes for the ride, including a Whitaker day rug.
