Top jockey’s suspension confirmed

  • Mick Kinane’s two-day suspension will take place today (Tuesday) and tomorrow

Mick Kinane’s two-day suspension for careless riding at Leopardstown on 18 July has finally been confirmedby the Irish Turf Club.

After much legal to-ing and fro-ing, 14-times champion Kinane will be banned on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

He appealed in controversial circumstances against the original suspension, which would have ruled him out of Ascot’s King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at the end of last month.

The appeal was dismissed and Kinane went to the High Court in Dublin and successfully obtained an interim injunction, which in effect provided a stay of execution and meant that he could ride the brilliant Galileo in the King George.

The legal manoeuvring proved successful, for it enabled Kinane to register an historic victory on Galileo in Britain’s biggest race of the summer.

The lid was finally put on the whole affair by the Irish authorities on Monday when justice was done and the original suspension implemented, if a month late.
