A residential event from Monday 1 July – Tuesday 2 July.
Oxford Brookes University works in partnership with Abingdon and Witney College to deliver three equine science courses. This summer school will give you an ideal opportunity to experience what it is like to be an equine science student at Oxford Brookes.
What Does the Summer School involve
Day 1
On the first day you will be introduced to all the staff that teach on the courses before having a tour of the Headington campus in Oxford, including a visit to the halls of residence where you will be staying. This will be followed by short presentations by current students and an overview of the courses and what Oxford Brookes has to offer.
Following a light lunch there will be a laboratory practical involving dissection of a horse’s leg. Provision will be made for the squeamish!
You will then be taken on an open top bus tour of the historical city of Oxford. You will be able to sample the city at night with an escorted walking tour and evening meal before heading back to Headington campus to stay the night in the halls of residence.
Day 2
In the morning you will be taken to the Abingdon and Witney College, Common Leys campus where you will have a talk and practical demonstration by Russell Guire, a leading expert in the field of gait analysis.
After lunch there will be a talk from Sam Hoskins who is the chairman of The Next Generation Club, an offshoot of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, specifically aimed at encouraging young participants in the thoroughbred industry.
During the day you will be able to meet the broodmares and their foals which form part of the resources available to all our students.
What Do I need to Bring With Me
You will need to bring a change of clothing, your night clothes, wash kit, towel and suitable footwear and waterproof clothing for practical sessions on the second day.
How Old do I have to be to Attend?
You need to be 16 or over by the date of the summer school.
How Much Money Will I need to Bring
The Summer School is FREE and includes en-suite accommodation in Oxford Brookes University’s halls of residence, lunch on both days and breakfast on the second day. You will need to bring money for your evening meal on the Monday night and public transport to and from the city centre.
My Parents/Guardians are Worried about the level of supervision
You will be supervised by trained staff at all times during the day and night. There will be a point of call contact number for parents/guardians included in the information pack once you have booked your place.
Foundation Degree in Equine Science and Management
This two year course is designed for those who want to combine the practical and theoretical elements of equine science and management. Selected modules across both years are delivered exclusively online allowing great flexibility for learners and increasing accessibility. The course offers graduates the opportunity to either go straight into the work place or continue in higher education by topping up onto BSc courses.
BSc Equine Science and BSc Equine Science and Thoroughbred Management
Our two BSc courses are modular and designed so that students can create their own programme to suit their own needs and interests.
They have a significant emphasis on academic research and are taught predominantly at Oxford Brookes. However we make sure that we put theory into practice by using the facilities at the Common Leys campus which include a small commercially run thoroughbred stud.
Students on all courses have the opportunity to use the riding horses and the stud horses for research as well as getting involved in the day to day operations of a busy and varied yard.
