Three of Britain’s racehorse charities are to get annual donations of £35,000 from the British Horseracing Board’s charity to help rehabilitate racehorses
The British Horseracing Board is pledging donations of at least £35,000 a year to three of Britain’s best known racing charities. The pledges are guaranteed for the next three years.
The BHB’s charitable arm, the Rehabilitation of Racehorses (RoR), which was set up last year, is giving the money to:
- Greatwood in Okehampton, Devon
- The Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre near Preston in Lancashire
- The Moorcroft Racehorse Welfare Centre in Battle, Sussex.
Michael Yeadon, founder of the Greatwood centre, said: “The donation from the BHB is invaluable but with around £125,000 per year running costs there is still a big gap, which we have to meet by fund-raising.
“Last year we rehabilitated and rehomed 26 horses, but sadly had to turn more than 30 away as we didn’t have the funding.
“The BHB money should allow us to plan ahead. We are hoping to move to a more central location, which will make it easier and cheaper to transport horses from around the country, particularly East Anglia where many come from.”
