Spotlight on equine welfare

  • Leading equine charities team up to promote equine welfare and responsible horse ownership during the inaugural equine welfare week

The first ever week devoted to promoting equine welfare kicks off next month, with a range of seminars and open days organised by leading equine charities, including the BHS, the ILPH, and The Home of Rest for Horses.

The numbers of horses owned by private household increased dramatically in the lastdecade. BETA figures show they went up by 500,000 between 1995 and 1999. The special promotion week is aiming to educate as many as possible into responsible horse ownership.

A number of equestrian celebrities are lending their support. International event rider, Pippa Funnell, says: “If you neglect your horse or try to cut corners to avoid expense, you will soon find out that it is far more costly in the long run.

“Equine Welfare Week is a great opportunity for anyone to learn more about horse care and just what it involved.”

The welfare week, which runs from 8 to 16 September, is part of the Jeep National Riding Festival which promotes riding throughout the country.

Each event will offer opportunities to learn about different aspect of horse care, including behaviour, nutrition and farriery.
