A collection of works by the hunting artist Snaffles is to be auctioned later this week
Somerset-based auctioneers, Greenslade Taylor Hunt, are hosting a sale of more than 70 worksby hunting artist, Snaffles, on Friday (28 September).
The collection by the artist, also known as Charlie Johnson Payne, ranges from Christmas cards, which the auctioneers say are expected to reach between £20-£30, to original watercolours which could go for between £4,000-£5,000.
The auction of the artist, who died in 1967, is believed to be the largest collection of his works ever to go up for sale in one go. The vast majority of the items belonged to the late Captain Edward Cazenove who died last year.
Nigel Muers-Raby, sporting specialist from the auctioneers, said: “Snaffles is probably the most famous sporting artist of the early 20th century. He is generally recognised by people who hunt as the artist most capable of portraying hunting and what it means – he had a remarkable ability to capture the feel of hunting.”
Viewing for the sale in Taunton, Somerset starts on Tuesday, 25 September.
