Veteran wins Strongid-P qualifier

  • Experience counts as Ian Bertram claims the single horse class at Dabbs EC

Ian Bertram and his veteran chesnut Quarter Horse, Beltane Star, were worthy champions in the single horse class at Dabbs Equestrian Centre in Fife.

Edinburgh-based Ian won for the third time in a row with his experienced 16-year-old mare. Leading throughout the competition, they were exceptionally fast through the obstacles to take victory from Karen Blair-Imrie and her nine-year-old Hackney.

“I was going to retire ‘Farrah’ after the 2000 national championships, but indoor driving has given her a new lease of life – she’s like a different horse.” said Ian, who has represented Britain twice at Royal Windsor.

Amanda Saville, driving her Welsh section D, won the single pony class after taking the lead in dressage and going flat out through the obstacles. Audrey Barron and her Highland had an excellent cones round but a couple of knockdowns in the obstacles dropped them to third behind Liz Melville.

Victory in the novice single pony went to Alison Maynard, driving Lizzie, a 10-year-old show pony. Talented youngster Rachel Jackson and her Welsh section A finished second and she was also the best junior.

Pat White, wife of event organiser John, and her pair of Shetlands were winners of the multiples class. Victory in the tandems section went to Andrew Mylius and his Fells over Jane Macinnes with her Welsh ponies.
