Show jumper turns NH jockey

  • Young Irish show jumper Robert Power is giving up show jumping to become a national hunt jockey

Young Irish show jumper Robert Power, who has been based in Britain, first with Peter Charles and latterly at Joan and Michael Bates’s Essex yard, is taking a break from the sport to fulfil his lifelong ambition of becoming a national hunt jockey.

Robert, a former young riders European gold medallist, has secured a place at trainer Noel Meade’s yard in Navan.

Robert rode in one point-to-point at the age of 16 and has dieted down to 10st to begin his new career.

“I’ve really loved it with Mr and Mrs Bates, who have been so good to me, but becoming a jockey was all I ever really wanted to do. I’ll miss everyone, but I’m not promising that I’ll never be back. You never know what’s around the corner,” said Robert.
