Strong entries for the Fayre Oaks sale resulted in high prices for some ponies, while others went home unsold
Despite FMD and the clash with the Horse of the Year Show, last week’s Fayre Oaks sale had more than 500 quality pure- and part-bred Welsh ponies scheduled to go under the hammer.
First Day
The two-day sale began well on Friday, 5 October with the first pony, Bengad Calla Lily, making £620. This black mare by Bengad Wallnut out of Bengad Crab Cactus was immaculately turned out and a credit to breeder Laura Hutchins.
The solid Welsh Section A chesnut roan mare Rookery Jezie (by Rookery Rupert/out of Rookery Jaqueline) made the highest price of the first day at £1,250. The next highest price (£1,050) was for Scrafton Garland, a bay section B mare (Mollegaards Spartacus/Horsegate Gigi) with a stunning colt foal by Carwed Charmer.
Numerous well-bred ponies were sold for less than £300, with some colt foals making as little as £18 pounds. However, several ponies had high reserves and despite the current market, the owners took them home.
Second day
The first lot of the second day (Saturday, 7 October), Castlemead Sapphire was the highest price for until mid-morning at just £650. This bay Welsh section A is by Eppynt Superstar out of Tiverton Coral.
Things improved steadily and Springbourne Stud enjoyed excellent prices for its older stock, as well as for the palomino yearlings Blanche Melissa (£850) and Blanche Maralyn (£900), both by Owston Harvest. However, Owstons Stud’s own dun filly foal, Owston Pinneykin, reached just £200 and was not sold.
Palomino is extremely popular colour at present and the eye-catching Dymock Disco Dancer, a palomino Welsh section B yearling colt, achieved £700.
Glyncoch Stud achieved one of the highest prices ever for a section A foal – and the highest price of the sale – with Glyncoch Nia Fach. This pretty “leg at each corner” filly (Maesgwyn Hi Tec/Yaverland Nia) moved beautifully and was sold for an amazing £1,800 to the Hon Mrs Monck. The Hon Mrs Monck, who bred Glyncoch Nia Fach’s mother, got a good price of £1,200 for the pretty section A chesnut filly foal Yaverland Georgina.
The surprise of the sale was the stunning 12.1hh three-year-old stallion Thornberry Ptarmigan, who has won everywhere including the Royal Welsh. He reached £4,200, which for an unproven colt, was an outstanding price, but owner Mrs Berry surprised the auction house with her decision not to sell.
