Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire police, currently investigating two sickening attacks which killed horses in each county, have arrested and released a man pending further inquiries.
Both horses were owned by the same family and it is believed that a private vendetta is behind the attacks and that other horse owners in the areas should not be concerned over their own animals welfare.
The first incident at Newton in Derbyshire involved an in-foal mare who died after being hung between two trees.
RSPCA officer Sonja Ryan said: “This is an appalling and deliberate act of cruelty made even worse by the fact that the mare was due to foal in a matter of weeks.”
The second attack took place at Sutton In Ashfield where another horse was stabbed.
The police are appealing for information and can be reached at either Sutton In Ashfield (tel: 01159670999) or Newton (tel:.01773 570100)
