British team lands the silver medal at the World TREC Championships in Belgium
Britain claimed the silver medal in the team competition at the World TREC Championships in Vielsalm, Belgium on 8-9 September, behind last-year’s title-holders France.
The British team of Anthea Kendrick, Paul Turner, Stephen Ramsay and David Hay-Thorburn, battled with France throughout the two-day competition, with British team members remaining at the top of the leaderboard in two of the three phases.
Anthea Kendrick put in an excellent performance on the first day to win the navigational section of the competition. Faye Hamilton finished equal third, with David Hay-Thorburn in ninth and Stephen Ramsay in tenth.
Rain was an added complication for competitions facing a tough course in unpleasant conditions on the second day. David Hay-Thorburn and Brenfield Mhairi made short work of the difficulties scoring 144 points to win the phase. GB team members Stephen Ramsay and Paul Turner took fifth and sixth place.
Rob Jones, British chef d’equipe said: “These championships showed that Britain is doing remarkably well in what is becoming a very serious competition. The French chef d’equipe admitted that the British offered the most serious challenge.”
Young rider takes silver
Young Becky Hine from Cumbria took the overall individual silver medal riding a borrowed horse in the Belgian Open Young Riders Championships, which ran alongside the World Championships.
Lying fourth after the first day, Becky won the final phase by an astonishing 20 points. Other young riders Amy Gibson and Richard Elliot also performed well, as did senior individuals Faye Hamilton and Ros Evans.
