Britain’s pentathlon team won individual and team gold in the final of the 2001 modern pentathlon world championships, held at Milllfield School in Somerset.
Peter Scott, spokesman for the British team, said: “We are absolutely delighted. You can’t get much better than that. There was a real buzz at the event and the competitors all appreciated the great support of the home crowd.”
The individual gold was won by reigning Olympic and European champion, Stephanie Cook. Lying in ninth position after the third stage, it was her strong performance over a difficult showjumping course that put Stephanie in contention for the gold medal, which she sealed with her run in the final phase.
Stephanie, who is now retiring to concentrate on her medical career, is going out on a high after winning an unprecedented three gold medals in the space of just 10 months.
Her medal-winning individual performance also contributed to team gold, combined with the efforts of fellow Brits Georgina Harland, (who also won individual bronze), Kate Allenby, who finished fifth and Sian Lewis, who finished 14th. Poland’s Paulina Boenisz separated the two Brits at the top, taking individual silver. Poland also took team silver with Russia finishing in the bronze position.
