Sports horse stallions graded

  • High standards sees four stallions approved at the Anglo-European Studbook show held at Addington EC

Standards were high at the Anglo European Studbook grading this year, of 33 new stallions presented, 12 failed – the first time that this judgement has been made. Previously, the lowest category was “registered”, but does not allow use at public stud.

There was also a fresh look to the judging panel. Regular assessorsGeoff Glazzard and Vicky Thompson were joined by long-time breeder Charlie Edwards, producer Adrian Marsh and Dutch stallion owners Kees van de Oetelaar and Henk Nijhof.

This show offers a unique opportunity for breeders to watch and compare stallions, many with top-level form and international potential. Grading was carried out on both days, with the stallions also on display in various jumping classes.

The only candidate approved on the first day was the Bamfords’ home-bred four-year-olddressage prospect, Wild At Heart. This lovely stamp contested young horse qualifiers this term with Alice Bamford, scoring 82% and finishing sixth in the Prevac Pro final.

The second day’s championship jumping classes yielded the three remaining successes. Dave Quigley rode Henry Harding’s Jalisco De Brumes to finish second in the four-year-old jumping championship.

Heather McPherson’s big-jumping grey, Cevin Z, has matured greatly since last year and he impressed with his scope, technique and attitude. Lisa Hales’s, Russel, was also approved after taking the style prize and second place in the six-year-old championship.

A further eight horses were licensed, allowing limited public use. Licensed and registered horses have the opportunity to upgrade in the future.
