In the first of a new occasional series in which H&H staff talk about products they simply could not live without, H&H website editor Carol Phillips reveals her favourite winter boots
I have been wearing my Mudrucker tall riding boots from Just Togs for the past three winters and I really rate them.
These boots are made from thick neoprene and have kept my feet warm and dry both on the yard and while out riding on the coldest days. I haven’t needed to wear thermal socks with them as my feet have been a comfortable temperature with my normal socks. They are ideal for really cold winter days, but I wouldn’t wear them on milder days as they give me sweaty feet when it isn’t cold.
The outside of the boot around the foot area and up the inside of the calf is flexible rubber and has not cracked with use. The boots have a steel shank, patterned sole and clearly defined heel, making them suitable for riding, as well as wearing around the yard.
Being fully waterproof you can wear them through deep mud when turning horses out, then simply hose them off and go riding. Because they are quite chunky I find them ideal for hacking, but tend not to use them for schooling unless it is extremely cold. Obviously they are not suitable for competing in, but they have been godsend at home.
The boots are a snug fit, particularly around the calf, which I like as it stops hay and shavings from dropping down inside the boot. But I am fairly slim, so if you have muscular calves you might want to go up a size.
