Irish show jumper Cameron Hanley to ride for Michael Bates following Robert Power’s return to the Emerald Isle to become a jockey
Ireland’s Cameron Hanley, winner of the King George V Gold Cup in 2000, will be moving to Essex and taking over as show jumping rider for owner Michael Bates.
Michael’s previous Irish rider, Robert Power, moved back to his native land after this year’s Horse of the Year Show to take up a new career as a national hunt jockey.
Cameron, who will make the move in January after his wife Evelyn has had their first child, enjoyed tremendous success for the Isle of Man’s Balleseyr Stables, but the sponsorship ended earlier this year.
Since then, he has ridden for Denise Stamp and been based in Hampshire with fellow Irish rider Peter Charles.
In Essex, he will be responsible for riding and producing Michael Bates’s horses and running an independent yard for his clients and their horses.
“I’ve been happy with Denise since Ballaseyr pulled out, but I’m now really looking forward to the move. Michael is a great supporter of show jumping,” said Cameron.
Michael Bates added: “Cameron will be ideal. Hespent an invaluable nine years working in Gerhard Etter’s jumping yard in Switzerland and, above all, he’s a top-class competition rider.”
