Riding club raises £5,000 for charity

  • Hearing Dogs for the Deaf and Macmillian Nurses benefit from a riding club’s generosity

A Hertfordshire riding club has donated £5,000 to charity, despite its 2001 season being decimated by the knock-on effects of FMD.

The Caddington & District Riding Club, near Hemel Hempstead, donated £2,000 to Hearing Dogs for the Deaf – a charity which it has supported for the past four years – and £3,000 to Macmillian Nurses, which provides care and support for terminally ill patients and their families.

Liz Arendt, who is deaf and has her own hearing dog, said: “The club’s ongoing support for Hearing Dogs has enabled it to sponsor a second dog. I knowfirst-hand just how important these dogs are to deaf people – my dog Ruffles has totally changed my life.”

The club held only four of its eight summer shows, which take place in a local cattle farmer’s field. The committee believed it was vital that the local farming community should not put at risk by the club’s shows.

“Although the club only held half our normal summer schedule competitors in the area were delighted to get out where we restarted,” explained outgoing chairman Sandra Hill. “Our first show in July was exceptionally well attended and had FMD precautions in place to ensure our host’s stock was not under threat.”

The Caddington and District Riding Club donates the profits of its summer shows to worthy causes every year.
