McCartney calendar highlights export cruelty

  • Linda McCartney’s Horses calendar has been launched to highlight the plight of horses exported for meat

Sir Paul McCartney has produced a calendar of photographs takenby his late wife, Linda, to promote the campaign by the anti-hunting animal charity, Viva, to end the export of live horses from Poland to Italy, France and Belgium for meat.

Thousands of complimentary copies of the calendar, Horses, are being sent out by McCartney’s office to his contacts around the world, including politicians and artists in the music and entertainment industries.

Paul McCartney says: ” I love horses and have great respect for them as beautiful, sensitive animals. They have been an important part of my life and have enriched it greatly.

“I believe they have the right to be treated with kindness, respect and love for all they have done for the human race.”

Linda McCartney, a professional photographer, owned horses for many years and her calendar is said to represent “a series of very personal memories taken over a period of several years”.

A spokesperson for Viva explained : “Linda loved horses and it is appropriate that we are currently campaigning to end the cruel and barbaric export of live horses.

“These beautiful and sensitive animals face five days road transport in overcrowded lorries, often without rest, food or water.

“They arrive dreadfully injured, exhausted, stressed and terrified – and frequently dead.”
