Eventing season kicks off

    We’re off!

    Miraculously, theweather held and the first two events of the 2002 horse trials season kicked off without a hitch with bumper entries and superb going.

    Leading riders were out in force with their new novices at Stilemans in Surrey and Islehamin Cambrideshire.

    At Stilemans, Julie Drongoole took the intermediate novice from Philip Clapham on Private Treaty, while novice winners included Owen Moore and Caroline Jackman, who tied in section G, IrishmanMarcus Reid on the stallion Catherston Golden Eagle, Australian Clayton Fredericks, Michael Paveley and Louisa Lockwood .

    At Isleham, Nat Dixon won the intermediate novice on Polvier’s Harold Spirit, whilenovice winners included Dora Nichols and Australians Matt Ryan and Bill Levett.

    Next weekend, the action moves to Poplar Park in Suffolk and Tweseldown, Hants, where the first intermediate classes of the season take place.

    Facelift for Tweseldown

  • After a winter of uncertainty, British Eventing is now on the verge of signing a lease on Tweseldown, a valuable schooling ground and event site, and the course has had a facelift courtesy of Blenheim’s builder David Evans.

    Pressure for Badminton riders

  • The pressure is on for those hoping to enter Badminton, for entries close just four days later, on 14 March, which means riders will have to enter horses without having done an advanced class.
