Sandown honours Queen Mother

  • Sandown Park racecourse is renaming a two-mile chase at their Gold Cup Celebration meeting in honour of the Queen Mother

The two-mile chase at Sandown Park’s Gold Cup Celebrationmeeting on Saturday 27 April will now be called The Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Celebration Steeplechase.

This will be an annual race and is in recognition of the Queen Mother’s many success at the racecourse over the years. She enjoyed nearly 80 victories, including the 1984 Whitbread Gold Cup with Special Cargo.

Her record of five wins as an owner in the Grand Military has yet to be beaten.

Sue Ellen, managing director of United Racecourses, said: “We felt this was a fitting tribute given Her Majesty’s love for Sandown Park and her success here as an owner, particularly when Special Cargo won the Gold Cup.”
