Spend a weekend with Shire horses

  • 8 May 2002

The Shire Horse Society is organising a Shire Horse Awareness weekend to promote this magnificent British breed

Shire horse yards around the country will be opening their doors on 18-19 May to allow equestrian enthusiasts and the public to meet these gentle giants of the horse world.

The Shire Horse Awareness weekend is being organised by the Shire Horse Society to promote these huge members of theequine community, which played a vital role in Britain’s history.

These fabulous horses, which were once common place in the streets around Britain, are now only accessible to the public at major shows and special events,” explains Shire Horse Society spokesperson John Ward.

“By allowing people to meet these amazing horses, we hope to educate a new generation about the strengths of this great breed, as well as the historical role that these fantastic horses played.”

Unlike some other British heavy horse breeds, which are on the endangered list, the Shire is holding its own with around 400 foals being bred in the UK every year.

Shires have become increasingly popular across Europe during the past decade, partly because of their laid back nature,” continues John. “Around 150 horses are exported every year, most of which will be used as riding horses.”

The following stables will be taking part in the weekend’s events:

    • Ivy House Farm, Hankelow, Crewe
    • Hockerwood Farm, Upton, Newark
    • Alvanley Arms Hotel, Tarporley, Cheshire
    • Tatton Hall Home Farm, Knutsford, Cheshire
    • The Begelly Arms Hotel, Begelly, Pembrokeshire
    • Broughtons Lodge, Flaxley, Glos
    • Umberslade Childrens Farm, Tanworth in Arden, Solihull
    • Star Brewery, Blackburn, Lancashire
    • Decoy Farm, Wisbech, Cambs
