A strong performance in Italy secures the British reining team a place in the World Equestrian Games
Britain’s reining team has qualified for the World Equestrian Games in Jerezafter finishing fourth at the European qualifier in Reggio Emilio, Italy.
As reining was a late addition to the programme in Jerez, only 10 teams plus six individuals can be accommodated, so a series of qualifiers have been held worldwide to decide the final contenders.
Winner of the European round was the host nation, Italy, with 1,302 points, ahead of Austria (1,286.5) and Germany (1,275).
Britain was just 4.5 marks adrift of the medallists on 1,270.5 and team member Roseanne Sternberg took individual fifth place with her Quarter Horse Nijomi Sonny Red. Switzerland took the fifth team place.
Italy, Germany and Austria are considered strong contenders for medals in Jerez, along with the USA.France, Sweden and the Netherlands will be fielding individuals.
Chef d’equipe Bill Archer said: “We are absolutely delighted with what the team has achieved. We were in third place after the first round and it is a tremendous thrill to think that we can challenge for the medal positions.
“The task now is to prepare the squad for the World Equestrian Games. We plan to take five riders and will be looking for the strongest combinations.”
