New challenge at Hickstead Dressage

  • Dressage at the Royal International Horse Show meeting will see judges and top riders pitted against each other in a new class

Top judges and riders will be pitted against each other in a test of horsemanship and nerves at the All England Dressage Derby Championships at Hickstead (24-28 July).

“Judge and be judged” is not a new reality TV show, but a class where a group of invited high-profile judges and riders each ride a test while being judged by the rest of the group.

Show director Dane Rawlins, who is responsible for the new class, said: “The judges will not only have to compete against each other, but will have to judge each other, too! It should provide some interesting results.”

Judges and riders who have agreed to lay themselves bare to scrutiny by their peers include Isobel Wessels and Judy Harvey.

The intermediaire I pas de deux to music on Saturday is also likelyto interest the crowds, with pairings likely to include Jane Bredin with Emile Faurie and Wayne Channon with Kyra Kyrklund.

The Pro/Am Championships add another dimension when the amateur riders of the 10 highest-placed horses in the elementary qualifier hand over to a professional dressage rider, who will ride in the final stage of the competition.

Leading international judge Trond Asmyr from Denmark has agreed to judge at these championships and theInternational CDIO in August.

The All England Dressage Derby Championships take place in conjunction with the Royal International Horse Show and will provide a showcase of dressage at all levels in the build-up to the 2003 European Championships, which are being held at Hickstead.
