The Joint Measurement Board announces a new initiative to stamp out over-height horses and ponies competing in showing and show jumping
The Joint Measurement Board (JMB) has announced that itintends to re-measure all championship winners at this year’s Horse of the Year Show (HOYS), as part of its efforts to exclude over-height animals from classes with a height restriction as a condition of entry.
The re-measurements will take place in early 2003. Horses and ponies that have already been re-measured or have Annual Measurement Certificates expiring on 31 December 2002 will not be re-measured. Any change in recorded height will come into effect from the date of the re-measurement.
Owners can request re-measurement (ie ratification of a height) under the rules of the JMB at any time. Re-measurement renders the animal immune from objections and further re-measurement.
The members of the JMB Ltd are the British Horse Society, British Show Hack, Cob and Riding Horse Association, British Show Jumping Association, British Show Pony Society, English Connemara Pony Society, National Pony Society, Ponies Association (UK), Sport Horse Breeding of Great Britain and the Welsh Pony and Cob Society.
The JMB appoints official measurers, who are all veterinary surgeons, to measure horses and ponies on approved pads using measuring sticks that have been certified by Trading Standards weights and measures departments.
