Rider is new face of UNICEF

  • The children’s charity UNICEF has a new ambassador – international dressage rider Ann Kathrin-Lisenhoff

Ann Kathrin’s two top horses Renoir, an 11-year-old gelding and Wahajama, an eight-year-old mare will now compete under the UNICEF name.

Ann Kathrin, who was part of Germany’s gold medal winning team in Seoul in 1988, initially set up a foundation trust fund for the charity with a donation of 500,000 Euros.

Speaking about what prompted her to become involved with the charity she said: “The death of my mother and brother made me re-evaluate my life. I was also in a very good situation financially and wanted to be able to give something back.”

A member of the German winning team at this year’s CDIO in Aachen, any prize-money won by the horses will be added to the project fund.

A spokesperson for UNICEF in Germany said: “We are delighted that Ann Kathrin has lenther support to us and hope it will increase awareness of our charity within the sport of dressage.”

Trained by her husband Klaus-Martin Rath, Ann currently has a 36 horses at her yard at Scafhorf near Frankfurt in Germany.

Work commitments mean that this year, Ann Kathrin who is hoping to go to the World Equestrian Games in Jerez, will be unable to see firsthand the work that UNICEF does in Third World countries.

However, following in the footsteps of her grandfather and mother who both helped the charity, she hopes to travel and see UNICEF in action next year.
