Former top racehorse and 1989 Derby winner, Nashwan, has been put down at the age of 16
Nashwan, winner of the 1989 Derby, has died at the age of 16. He was put down after complications set in following a minor operation on a hind leg.
“Everyone at Shadwell is stunned by the loss of this great horse,” said stud director Richard Lancaster. “The Thoroughbred world has now lost Nashwan and his half-brother Unfuwain in a short time.”
Both Unfuwain and Nashwan’s trainer Dick Hern died earlier this year.
Nashwan, by Blushing Groom out of the great broodmare Height Of Fashion, is the only horse to win the 2000 Guineas, Derby, Eclipse Stakes and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in the same season.
Marcus Tregoning, who was assistant to Hern during Nashwan’s career, said: “He was very exciting to watch and it was nice to watch him develop from a two-year-old. It was on the strength of Nashwan and the Major [Hern] that I am where I am today.”
