European bronze for young British teams

  • Britain is celebrating medal-winning success at the pony, junior and young rider European Championships

British youngsters had a highly successful weekend at the European championships for all three Olympic disciplines.

The young rider dressage team of Leah Beckett (Lodewijk); Charlotte Edmonds (Broomford Locarno); Sarah Millis (Korenbloem Lothar) and Gemma Green (Maxwell) pipped the Austrians to bronze in Rome, behind Germany (gold) and the Netherlands (silver). Charlotte Edmonds came fifth in the individual competition.

The pony dressage team was down to three members – Henry Boswell (DHI Peppino); Charles Bowles (Daphne II) and Lorna Edmonds (Manitu N) as Victoria Molloy’s mount Caesar 171 went lame just before the first test – but still claimed the bronze medal in Hagen, Germany. Lorna Edmonds came fifth in the individual, mirroring her sister’s achievement. The junior dressage team had less luck, coming seventh in their event.

Under-18 show jumper Lee Williams celebrated his departure from the category by claiming individual bronze on Zerano. The squad of Lee, Gemma Paternoster, Gemma Plumley and Ellen Whitaker finished seventh.

The pony eventing team also took bronze. The team consisted of Angus Smales, who finished 11th individually, Lucy Egginton (12th), Tamsyn Hutchins (13th) and Holly Rayner.

The Germans took gold and the Belgians silver in the team competition, with Belgium’s Wouter de Cleene winning gold individually.
