Crowds are expected to flock to this year’s Hickstead Derby meeting (22-25 August), to see top riders from around the world competing in the show’s international show jumping and dressage.
On Sunday elite show jumpers will be braving the 10ft 6ins near-vertical drop off the Derby Bank, as well as the infamous Devils Dyke, during the British Jumping Derby in the International Arena.
Also taking place on the Sunday (25 August) will be a new class, the Fordyce Curry British Ladies Jumping Derby. This class will see top British female show jumpers in action over a scaled down versions of Hickstead’s permanent obstacles in the Horseware Ireland Ring.
“We have introduced this class to bring on Derby horses for the future and to give lady riders some experience of a Derby course and encourage more of them to enter in future years. We have not had a lady winner in the British Jumping Derby since Alison Dawes in 1973,” said show secretary Lizzie Bunn.
Another popular class, the Hasseroeder Speed Derby on Saturday, will also provide great entertainment for spectators with last year’s winner Jens Fredericson returning to attempt a second win.
Hickstead visitors will also have a unique opportunity to give the British WEG teams a rousing send off when the show jumping, dressage, eventing, driving, endurance, vaulting and reining teams take part in a special International Arena parade on Sunday afternoon.
Don’t miss international dressage action
Alongside great showjumping, Hickstead will also be hosting international CDIO dressage with top riders including Dominique d’Esm‚ (France); Heike Holstein (Ireland); Patty Mayer (USA) and Anja Plonzke (Germany) taking part.
There’s also a chance to see Britain’s World Equestrian Games team in action with their horses when Richard Davison, Peter Storr, Emile Faurie and Laura Richardson take up the grand prix challenge.
The event will also be hosting a Nations Cup competition, with Britain competing against some of Europe’s top dressage nations including Germany, the Netherlands and France.
Horse & Hound Online has teamed up with Hickstead to offer one lucky winner a pair of members’ passes for the Saturday and Sunday, plus an overnight bed and breakfast stay in the Copthorne Hotel, which is built around a 16thCentury farmhouse and set in 100 acres of tranquil woodlands and landscapedgardens.
Five runners up will each win a pair of day tickets from Dressage at Hickstead, which can be used on any day includingat the weekend, and provide access to all areas of the showground.
