Records tumble at the Tattersalls Horses-in-Training sale, with many of the top lots heading for warmer climes
The Tattersalls Horses-in-Training sale, the largest, most cosmopolitansecond-hand market in the world, produced trading at record levels last week with eight of the 10 six-figure lots off to sunnier climes.
The pick of more than 800 horses on offer was Masani, a quality three-year-old colt from the Aga Khan’s consignment of cast-offs, at 250,000gns.
The John Oxx-trained son of Indian Ridge has not finished worse than fourth in all his nine starts and on his most recent outing beat 20 rivals in the Irish Cambridgeshire. In future, he will be plying his trade in Hong Kong after Dublin-based agent John McCormack repelled American interest.
The price paid has been bettered only once at the fixture, when Firebreak, then a recent winner of the group two Mill Reef Stakes, was sold last year to the Godolphin operation for 525,000gns.
McCormack also took the second horse on the leaderboard, Frankie’s Dream, but this one is bound for Saudi Arabia. The three-year-old colt, twice a winner over 10 furlongs, was unplaced behind High Chaparral in the Derby but has since shown a smart level of ability with places in the group three September Stakes at Kempton and a listed race at Newbury.
Dune (180,000gns), sold from Roger Charlton’s with a valuable prize at Haydock under his girth, is also heading to the desert kingdom, as is Tudor Wood (125,000gns), winner of a handicap at Newbury.
The week’s leading vendor was Khaled Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms, with a draft of 42 sold for an aggregate 1,077,000gns.
The best of them, Meteor Storm, is bound for California; the three-year-old, listed-placed in France for Criquette Head-Maarek, will be conditioned in his new home by Wally Dollase, two of whose buys last year, Mananan McLir and Doc Holiday, have won graded races.
With 24 purchases for a total of 837,000gns on behalf of mostly American clients, Berkshire-based agent Gordian Troeller was top of the buyers’ list.
His prime capture was juvenile Steelaninch at 100,000gns; the three-time winner is another heading for California.
Two high-profile buys who will be going hurdling are Lowlander (125,000gns), and Xtra (120,000gns).
