Highland Lad – Burghley winner 2002
A surprised William Fox-Pitt won the Burghley Masterfoods Horse Trials in September, riding Carol Hudson’s Highland Lad.
“Highland Lad is an out-and-out-jumper,” said William afterwards, “but I didn’t think he was ready mentally to win this. This is beyond my wildest dreams.”
Although delighted to win his second Burghley title, it also came as a shock for because the bay gelding was widely regarded as his “fourth string” ride.
