Professor Barrie Edwards, the internationally renowned colic specialist based at the University of Liverpool, has won the Veterinary Award at the 2002 BBC Animal Awards.
Professor Edwards is head of department at the Department of Veterinary Clinical Science at the Philip Leverhulme Large Animal Hospital, which is part of the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Liverpool.
The awards were televised on 27 December and highlighted Professor Edwards’ innovative work in the field of colic surgery over the past 30 years .
The award is given in recognition of the veterinary surgeon or team in Great Britain, who has done the most to advance animal healthcare – treatment or prevention.
In the 1960s, survival rates for equine colic surgery were just 30% compared to around 80% today . Speaking on the programme, Professor Edwards said: “We have come a long way from the days when most colic surgery was performed on straw beds and I hope I will be able to witness the advances made in the next 40 years.”
The PhilipLeverhulme Large Animal Hospital currently sees more than 1,600 horses each year that have been referred by vets to make use of the best treatment available.
