A passenger travelling on a bus to Port Talbot in South Wales discovered an abandoned seven-week-old puppy under one of the seats.
The passenger took the brindle coloured male to the RSPCA branch charity shop in Port Talbot, where it was collected by RSPCA inspector Elaine Spence, who took him to the charity’s LlysNini Animal Centre in Penllergaer, Swansea.
Hungry and thirsty, the collie/spaniel cross has been named Gus by staff who say he is making good progress.
The centre’s manager Steve Byrne said: “Gus is doing remarkably well considering his ordeal. It must have been very frightening for such a young puppy to be on his own in unfamiliar and noisy surroundings. He is settling in well and is extremely friendly.
“Although we cannot be sure, we think Gus could have been a Christmas present. The RSPCA has to deal with many cases of abandonment all year round and we actively discourage people from buying pets as presents.
“Often the new owners have tired of them after the festive season and abandon them without athought. This incident looks like our seasonal message is still not getting through.”
Gus is just one of the many animals up for re-homing at the Nini Animal Centre, anyone interested in offering a permanent home should contact the centre directly (tel: 01792 229435).
