BSJA trainer Alan Fazakerley demonstrated show jumping techniques at novice, intermediate and advanced stages in front of an audience of around 130.
The event, which included a Q&A session, was hailed a success as the Lancashire pupils gained an insight into event management, broadened their equine knowledge and raised £450 for the Norfolk-based charity.
With vacancies in the South-East and north of England, the scheme will lead to either foundation or advanced modern apprenticeships, which contain NVQ qualifications.
Blacup’s Stephen Place said: “There is a real need for this training as a route into the retail sector or the equestrian and allied industries.” The starting training allowance – set by the government – is a minimum £40 per week, but many apprentices receive more.
“Successful trainees can go onto employment at salaries of £9,000, rising to the upper £20,000 bracket as they become managers,” said Stephen.
