This year’s SEIB/BEF Young Horse Evaluation finals have been moved from the Horse of the Year Show to the Royal Show. Each discipline’s championship will be take place on a different day, with eventing on 29 June, followed by show jumping (30) and dressage (1 July).
The organisers have moved the finals forward in the hope of attracting entries from more home-produced horses, as opposed to those ridden by professionals.
“We are hoping that an earlier date will make it easier to compare horses ridden by professionals with those which are owner-ridden,” says committee member Edith Rutherford. “We are not judging the level of training a horse has reached, but are trying to evaluate its long-term career prospects.”
The competition is for four-year-old horses onlyand aims to assess the potential soundness, trainability, jumping ability, paces and temperament of young horses entering competition, to provide data for the development of genetic indices and provide a market for breeders and owners.
Prizes are awarded at each qualifier for the most promising dressage horse, sponsored by Genus Equine; the most promising eventer (South Essex Insurance Brokers) and most promising show jumper (New Priory Stud).
