A Swansea and Gower coroner has returned a verdict of accidental death after an inquest was held into the death of a mother who died after her horse bolted.
Amanda Davies, 32 from Pontardulais, near Swansea, died from head injuries on 17 August last year. The mother of one, who was wearing a hat, was pronounced dead at the scene after her new horse Trigger bolted as she tried to mount.
The inquest heard how Amanda and her nine-year-old daughter Catherine had planned to ride out together shortly before the accident happened.
Catherine lost sight of her mother as Trigger bolted and the postman found Amanda’s body on the driveway.
Despite his attempts to resuscitate her, Amanda died from a fractured skull, which she sustained when her hat tipped forward, exposing her head.
At the time of the accident, both Amanda and her daughter were wearing hats, bought by Amanda’s husband, which complied with the current British Safety Standard.
Swansea and Gower coroner Richard Morgan returned a verdict of accidental death.
A spokesperson from the Coroner’s office said: “I believe that Mr Davies is pursuing the idea that there was a problem with the fitting of the hat.”
