A teenager has been airlifted to hospital after she was crushed by a Hurston bale of hay while working on the farm at Redwings Horse Sanctuary.
The 19-year-old was filling haynets in a barn at the centre in Hapton, Norwich when the accident took place on Monday morning (30June).
Work colleagues managed to free her and immediately called the emergency services.
The East Anglian Ambulance NHS Trust despatched an air ambulance, which arrived on the scene within 15 minutes. She was airlifted to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital where she underwent surgery for a fractured pelvis and is reported to be in a stable condition.
Matthew Ware, a spokesperson for East Anglian Ambulance NHS Trust, says: “A large hay bale fell from a height of about eight feet pinning her on her side. When the paramedics arrived she was in a lot of pain. They suspected a fractured pelvis and she was airlifted to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital.”
John Archibald, chief executive of Redwings Horse Sanctuary, says: “A member of staff was filling haynets and unfortunately a bale of hay toppled over and fell onto her. She received prompt medical attention and was airlifted to hospital where it appears she has suffered an injury to her pelvis.”
