Equine veterinary research to benefit from £1.6m

  • A total of £1.6m has been awarded to equine veterinary research and education for 2013 by The Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB) — a body which collects a statutory levy from bookmakers and the Tote.

This is a 30% rise on the 2012 allocation of money to racehorse health. It will contribute to nine new research projects including one focusing on the repair of injured tendons and another determining the risk of African Horse Sickness.

“We are delighted that the board has been able to continue with its long-standing and effective investment in key areas such as infectious disease, racehorse safety and musculoskeletal injury,” said the HBLB’s Professor Willie Donachie.

As well as these projects, three new research scholarships have been awarded to provide PhD training.

“The grants support a full programme of scientific research and education that will make useful contributions to racehorse health for owners, breeders, trainers and their veterinary advisers,” added Professor Donachie.
