Man arrested in relation to fire that killed show horses

  • A 43-year-old man from Hertfordshire has been arrested and released on bail in relation to a fire that killed four horses belonging to showing exhibitor Jenna Saunders.

The man was arrested on 16 October in Walkern, East Herts at 8am. He was questioned by the police and released on bail pending further enquries.

He is due to return to Hoddesdon police station on 7 December

The four horses died in a stable fire, after a suspected attempted burglary went wrong.

The fire broke out at the yard in Bennington Road, Walkern at around 1.50am on Wednesday 3 October.

Police believe thieves were trying to get to a quad bike in a metal container next to the stables, and that a fire started in the process.

Chief inspector for East Herts Gerry McDonald said: “We take these kinds of offences very seriously and are completely committed to tackling rural crime.”
